Avanzando Through College (ATC)
Baylor’s Avanzando Through College (ATC) program is a collaboration with UnidosUS aimed at equipping Latino students with the skills, information, and support systems needed to identify student services, improve academic performance, and graduate from college. The program offers workshops and events focused on topics identified by researchers, practitioners, and students as being vital to college retention and success of Latino students at Baylor.
The program give students a personalized, culturally competent support network that adds value to the college experience of Latino students. Avanzando Through College supports predominantly first-generation, Latino students in their first and second years of college by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and support necessary to successfully navigate the higher education system with the goal of graduating with a bachelor’s degree.
The Avanzando curriculum is designed to utilize the following strategies demonstrated to improve college retention:
- Celebrates and enhances cultural assets
- Focus on building college level study habits
- Build learning communities with their peers
- Help students to identify and utilize on campus resources
Students in the program must participate in once a month workshops, complete a pre and post survey and meet regularly with Avanzando staff to be eligible to receive a $500 total book scholarship ($250 a semester per active participation in the program).
