Adelante Beyond
Program Description
The Adelante Beyond Program is designed to cultivate mentorship, enhance leadership opportunities for its members, and provide continuous opportunities for community and civic engagement. This unique program brings together returning Baylor Latinx students and Adelante: First Year Experience Alumni, to provide mentorship for the incoming Adelante First Year Experience cohort while also actively engaging in campus and community leadership opportunities.
In addition to leadership opportunities, Adelante Beyond: Peer Mentors will receive a $350 scholarship each semester they are actively engaging in the program.
Key Components
Mentorship
The heart of the Adelante Beyond Program lies in its commitment to mentoring the incoming the cohort of Adelante students. Adelante Peer Mentors will attend each Adelante monthly meeting and serve as a group facilitator; encouraging students to engage in the content and have dialogue on the topics being discussed. Students will check in with their mentees each semester and are encouraged to host get togethers or social gatherings if possible. These mentor-mentee connections can foster belonging and connectedness to peers, allowing the new cohort to see students with similar backgrounds and identities as them, in positions of leadership.
Leadership Enhancement
Empowering Baylor’s Latino/a/x students to take on leadership roles is a core focus of the program. By actively engaging in campus and community leadership opportunities, participants develop leadership skills, amplify their voices, and put themselves in positions of authority, showcasing to their peers and incoming students that they are represented in leadership roles.
Community and Civic Engagement
Community and civic engagement is a key component to advancing the knowledge and information provided during the Adelante program. As an Adelante Peer Mentor, members are taking what they learned in the Adelante program to the next level by actively engaging in the community. Adelante Peer Mentors will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Hispanic Leaders Network to attend leadership seminars and events, while also being able to participate in community service initiatives and events that connect them with local organizations to promote social responsibility. Through these experiences, members can develop a deeper understanding of their role in their local and campus communities, fostering commitment to themselves and those around them.
